Throw in changing start times and some other things and it really is very sad. They tried to hard to cater to the west coast fans and forgot what got them where they are in the first place. I'm not slamming anyone on here from the west coast either but fans of the sport still watched it with the earlier start times. I mean look at Formula 1 people who are fans stay up until 3 am or wake up at 6 am to watch the races. F1 doesn't change start times to try and help out one certain part of the world why should NASCAR change start times just for one section of fans. Honestly I think people miss waking up, going to church or working around the house for a couple hours and then turning the race on around noon or 1 o'clock and watching the race. Instead now people find other things to do for that extra time and some just don't get around to watching the race. It was convenient for people. Really why does the Daytona 500 end at nighttime now? There are enough night races and there's even another night race later in the year at Daytona. Bring one of the Lowes races back to daytime, how many Saturday dirt track guys and fans don't watch the NASCAR race because their out running or watching the local guys. The night races are okay but I think there are too many of them and now you have too many cookie-cutter follow the leader tracks it would be one thing if they could pass but they struggle with passing so bad anymore that those tracks aren't fun to watch a race on TV anymore.

Which brings me to TV, the coverage is almost annoying sometimes and doesn't do the racing at some of these places justice. I've been to Michigan twice and both times the racing back through the back is great, 3 and 4 wide battles almost every lap but TV coverage constantly shows the Hendrick car's that can run up front and only goes back in the pack to tell us that the other Hendrick car, Dale Jr., is back in 25th a lap down and mad at his crew chief...again. They need to show the racing through the pack.

On top of that they need to figure out how to let cars pass again and make tires wear at EVERY track not just Atlanta and Darlington. That way when someone takes 4 tires they can run down and pass someone who got out there on two(see: Bill Elliott at Indy 2002) That makes racing more interesting but means the car is 10 times out of 10 going to be faster if they take 4 tires which isn't always the case now. 2 tires should be a strategy call that could make you or break you, if you take 2 tires at the end of a race these days as long as you get a good restart and your the leader you can win it even if the guys 2-20th took 4 just because people can't pass very well.

Brand identification goes a long way too. People like rooting for the cars they love and these cars look nothing like "stock cars" any more and as bad as I hate hearing non-racing people call these cars "NASCARS" that's is honestly what they are anymore, there isn't anything stock car about them anymore, at least the Nationwide series will have some brand identification next season, the body styles differ from car to car and the Challenger actually has a square looking front end, imagine that a nose on a stock car that looks somewhat similar to the stock car.

Some people may say the 80's and early 90's races weren't as good when there were 5-10 guys finishing on the lead lap but with that being said those were the only 5-10 guys who had a real shot at winning week in and week out, I mean underdog teams had a shot then at showing up and winning if they hit on something but normally the same 5-10 guys were pretty competitive week in and week out, the competition is to a point now days though where there are 20-30 cars who could win a race on any given week and if there a way to put these teams today and their safety with the racing from the 80's and 90's I think you would have 20-30 cars still finish on the lead lap but have better racing. I think it honestly could be as simple as telling these team owners your car needs to have a body the same as it's stock counterpart, we need to be able to take a body off the racing frame and be able to mount it on the street car frame. Put street car bodies on these cars again with racing components under them and it would help fix some things, the cars would punch holes in the air just like they did in the 80's and early 90's. But with all this being said I doubt anything like that will ever happen any time soon, once it falls out of the public eye again it might but not while their still having networks give them millions upon millions for their product.
